The Collects

A Collect for The Fourth Sunday In Lent

GRANT, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we, who for our evil deeds do worthily deserve to be punished, by the comfort of thy grace may mercifully be relieved; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Collect for the Eve of St Cuthbert Of Lindisfarne

ALMIGHTY God, the light of the faithful and shepherd of souls, who didst call thy servant Cuthbert to be a bishop in the Church, to feed thy sheep by the word of Christ and to guide them by his godly example: give us grace to abide by the faith of the Church and to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

A Collect for the Season of Lent

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent; Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Second Collect at Evening Prayer

O GOD, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed Jn 15:5; Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give Jn 14:27; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

The Third Collect, for Aid against all Perils

LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord 1 Jn 1:5 Eph 5:14; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Remember not, O Lord God

REMEMBER not, O Lord God,
our old iniquities, but let thy mercy speed'ly prevent us, for we be very miserable.
Help us God our Saviour, and, for the glory of thy name, deliver us.
Be merciful and forgive our sins, for thy names sake.
Let not the wicked people say, "Where is their God?"
We be thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture.
We shall give thanks unto thee for ever.
From age to age we shall set forth thy laud and praise.
To thee be honour and glory, world without end.
Amen.

A Prayer of St Chrysostom

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise, that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests; Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. A Closing Hymn

O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done

O Love divine, what hast thou done!
The immortal God hath died for me!
The Father’s co-eternal Son
Bore all my sins upon the tree.
Th’immortal God for me hath died:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Is crucified for me and you,
To bring us rebels back to God.
Believe, believe the record true,
Ye all are bought with Jesus’ blood.
Pardon for all flows from His side:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Behold and love, ye that pass by,
The bleeding Prince of life and peace!
Come, sinners, see your Savior die,
And say, “Was ever grief like His?”
Come, feel with me His blood applied:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Then let us sit beneath His cross,
And gladly catch the healing stream:
All things for Him account but loss,
And give up all our hearts to Him:
Of nothing think or speak beside,
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

A Closing Organ Voluntary

Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder (Buxtehude)

ACH Herr, mich armen Sünder
Straf nicht in deinem Zorn,
Dein' ernsten Grimm doch linder,
Sonst ist's mit mir verlorn.
Ach Herr, wollst mir vergeben
Mein Sünd und gnädig sein,
Daß ich mag ewig leben,
Entfliehn der Höllenpein.

Ah Lord, poor sinner that I am,
do not punish me in Your wrath,
yet soften Your grave fury,
or else all is lost for me.
Ah Lord, if you will only forgive
my sin and be merciful to me,
then I may live forever,
escaping the torment of hell.
