Jesus Dies On The Cross

HEAR this, thou Languishing and afflicted Soul: there is not one of thy sins, but it is paid for; not one of thy debts, in the scroll of God, but it is crossed: not one farthing of all thine infinite ransom is unpaid.

Bishop Joseph Hall (1574-1656)

The Prayer

O SAVIOUR of the world, who by thy Cross and Precious Blood hast redeemed us; Save us, and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord.

The Reading

AND at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

Mark 15:34-38

The Collect

MAY we, who have by Baptism put on Christ, walk answerably to our Christian calling, and as becometh the children of light; remembering always that Baptism representeth unto us our profession; which is, to follow the example of our Saviour Christ, and to be made like unto him; that as he died, and rose again for us; so should we, who are baptized, die from sin, and rise again unto righteousness; continually mortifying all our evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding in all virtue and godliness of living. Amen.

The Supplication

BY thine Agony and Bloody Sweat; by thy Cross and Passion; by thy precious Death and Burial; by thy glorious Resurrection and Ascension, and by the Coming of the Holy Ghost, Good Lord, deliver us.

The Lord's Prayer

OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hymn

JESUS hath died that I might live,
Might live to God alone;
In him eternal life receive,
And be in spirit one.

2 Saviour, I thank thee for the grace,
The gift unspeakable!
And wait with arms of faith to embrace,
And all thy love to feel.

3 My soul breaks out in strong desire
The perfect bliss to prove;
My longing heart is all on fire
To be dissolved in love.

4 Give me thyself; from every boast,
From every wish set free;
Let all I am in thee be lost;
But give thyself to me.

5 Thy gifts, alas, cannot suffice
Unless thyself be given;
Thy presence makes my paradise,
And where thou art is heaven!
